Because she did well and got complimented and she really is every bit as intelligent as she's been told. Praise on the whole is uncomfortable. She doesn't like being thanked, she doesn't like receiving gifts, she doesn't like hearing that she looks or smells nice because those are all unfamiliar and she doesn't deserve them -- trash, monsters, defective products et al just don't deserve that kind of treatment. It's best to stick to the status quo of things.
