[Like a rabbit who has trained itself to know the weight in the footfall of a fox on the prowl, Christopher instinctively understands the tone and the danger it implies. The words only reveal that the danger has found a new form to take.

But even as his frightened animal's mind assesses the threat, Christopher remains calm, even peaceful. He is a lab rat who has submitted to its fate. It's a waste of energy to try to escape a trap that can't be escaped, so Christopher can't even bother with his own fear.

In other words, Christopher is like a worshipper who has reconciled with the ineffable nature of his God. Just as he used to, he accepts this new violence with a serene reverence.]


A reward, Master Huey? Why, such a thing is like expecting a to find a handful of dandelions and discovering that there are daisies among their number as well. Serving you is a reward in itself. I am grateful for that happiness and any other you may bestow upon me.
